We had a great TASK parade today on Franklin Street, etc. to drum up support for Saturday’s TASK Party. Lots of yelling, goofy chanting, and picking up of participants along the way. The word’s really getting out!!

Tomorrow, there will be another TASK Parade, this time in THE PIT at 12 NOON. BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!!!

German-born experimental artist Oliver Herring will lead an improvisational community event March 20 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Herring, the spring artist-in-residence in the art department in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, will be on campus March 15-26.

On March 20 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. in Gerrard Hall on Cameron Avenue, Herring will lead a free public “TASK” party, an event with a simple structure and few rules in which people are invited to express and test their own ideas.

Participants write down tasks on pieces of paper and add them to a pool; people then pull random tasks from the pool and interpret them in any way they want, using whatever props and materials are available. Herring provides items that may include cardboard, plastic bags, pencils, tables, plastic wrap, tape, markers or ladders.New tasks are then written down and performed, and the process goes on. The open-ended structure creates opportunities for people to interact with one another and their environment.

Herring also is known for his art objects – Mylar sculptures, Styrofoam photo sculptures, performative videos – which often involve unusual materials and collaborations between the artist and his subjects.His work has been shown at museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
